Performance Materials and Technologies at Honeywell
Performance Materials and Technologies
Performance Materials and Technologies is a high-performing, global business with an array of technologies that are changing the world for the better. We develop and manufacture advanced materials and process technologies used in a wide range of industries and applications, from petroleum refining to environmentally-friendlier refrigerants to bullet-resistant vests. Our advanced materials are critical in the manufacture of products ranging from nylon to computer chips to pharmaceutical packaging.
Performance Materials and Technologies holds more than 3,900 patents globally and employs 2,800 engineers (about one-third of its total workforce) and 1,100 R&D personnel, including 400 with doctorates. Performance Materials and Technologies comprises five businesses, each of which succeeds on the strength of its technology portfolio, complimented with expertise in engineering, sales, marketing and supply chain.
UOP
UOP is the recognized leader in developing and licensing process technology used by refiners and petrochemicals producers to produce gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and the building blocks for plastic and other products. It also develops and sells catalysts, adsorbents, equipment, process plants and technical services.
UOP is pioneering technology to get plastics from natural gas and to get more valuable products out of every barrel of oil. UOP has also developed technology to produce real fuels from renewable energy sources, including Honeywell Green Diesel™ and Honeywell Green Jet Fuel™, which was used to power the first transatlantic biofuel flight.
Fluorine Products
Fluorine Products has long pioneered solutions that make the world more comfortable and energy efficient, including refrigerants, foam insulation blowing agents, aerosols and solvents that have zero ozone-depleting potential. Honeywell is now commercializing a family of offerings with similar performance properties as the materials they replace, but with significantly lower global warming potential. For example, Honeywell's new automobile refrigerant, Solstice™ yf, has a global warming potential of 4, compared with 1,300 for the refrigerant found in most cars today. It's a simple change that can dramatically reduce the environmental footprint of the vehicle fleet around the globe.
Specialty Products
Specialty Products serves a wide variety of industries with leading technologies that yield safer, better and more cost-effective products. Aclar® films are used extensively in pharmaceutical and medical packaging, protecting medicines from moisture. Our Performance Additives are used to produce better inks, adhesives, paints, coatings, plastics and personal care products. Honeywell's Spectra® fiber, 15 times stronger than steel yet light enough to float, is used in vests and helmets that protect military personnel and law enforcement officers around the world. Honeywell's PowerShield® backing systems protect photovoltaic modules used to generate solar energy, enabling them to have greater efficiency over their lifetimes.
Resins and Chemicals
Resins and Chemicals is one of the world's largest makers of caprolactam, an essential ingredient for producing nylon, as well as nylon resins. Both are used to make products we use every day – from engineered plastics for automobiles to carpeting to food packaging. It is also major producer of ammonium sulfate, a highly effective fertilizer. Honeywell scientists and engineers have also created a new fertilizer, Sulf-N® 26, a unique substance that is a great fertilizer and is impractical to use as an explosive. Sulf-N 26 is the first nitrate-based fertilizer to receive SAFETY Act designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Honeywell Electronic Materials
Honeywell Electronic Materials supplies critical materials and solutions to the semiconductor industry, helping manufacturers develop innovative technologies and overcome manufacturing challenges. It is now applying that expertise to products such as flat-panel displays, photovoltaics and printable electronics . Continuous investment in advanced research, worldwide strategic collaborations, and dedication to working closely with our customers have resulted in a wide range of innovative products that enable the performance of today's ubiquitous electronic devices and equipment.
